Cassels Brock Joins Prominent Lease Attorney Network

July 31 2008 - Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP, a Canadian law firm, joins LEAN, the Lease Enforcement Attorney Network, to support the burgeoning growth of cross-border transactions in the leasing industry. Recent changes to the Canadian Income Tax Act have created an attractive platform for US finance companies seeking cost-effective options for their mid-ticket clients. Cassels Brock is well positioned to assist these companies with their lease enforcement and recovery needs in the Toronto area and throughout Canada. According to Cassels Brock partner Jonathan Fleisher, "We are excited to be a part of the LEAN network and proud to join an organization of the top legal firms in the leasing industry."

With more than 200 lawyers, including more than 40 practicing exclusively in the area of financial services, Cassels Brock is one of leading full-service business law firms in Canada and the ninth largest in the Toronto area. Clients of LEAN will benefit from the firm's comprehensive range of resources and its extensive experience with US and international clients.

Cassels Brock structures its financial services department to integrate both origination lawyers and recovery lawyers. By using this approach, clients have access to both the in-depth financial industry knowledge of the firm's origination lawyers and the advocacy and court room skills of its recovery team. This solutions-based approach provides clients with business-focused enforcement of their claims.

The Cassels team is lead by Jonathan Fleisher, who has more than 15 years of leasing experience as both a general counsel and outside legal advisor. Over the years, he has acted in all facets and for all segments of the leasing industry, from small-ticket lessors to multinational bank-owned leasing companies. He has been responsible for implementing unique cross-border structures and assisting numerous finance companies in establishing operations in Canada. He has also acted as lead counsel in large and small cross-border insolvencies, assisting clients in obtaining equitable solutions

Jonathan is joined by his insolvency and restructuring partners, Frank Spizzirri and Joseph Bellissimo, whose practices focus on the corporate and litigious aspects of the recovery process. Frank and Joe have worked on complicated commercial finance recoveries including direct enforcement of lessors' claims in both direct summary judgment claims and complex CCAA matters. Through their direct involvement in lease claims, they have developed a thorough knowledge of how the courts deal with lessors in a variety of circumstances and can apply that knowledge to assist clients in obtaining optimal results.

LEAN is a non profit organization of well known law firms throughout North America with a practice concentration in the enforcement of equipment leasing and finance obligations. LEAN law firms are carefully selected for their expertise in leasing law and are highly regarded by top leasing companies. For nearly a decade, clients have turned to LEAN firms for high recovery rates and cost effective solutions.
